The creation and advantages of ASON

ASON refers to a flexible, highly scalable optical network capable of providing services on demand directly over the optical layer. Transmission equipment is the basic transmission carrier of ASON, usually providing linear or ring-type networking structure. Optical cross-connect device OXC is the core hardware device of ASON, providing a switching platform for it.ASON, as a new technology in the field of transport network, has more advantages in service configuration, bandwidth utilization and protection mode compared with traditional SDH network. In recent years, SDH fiber optic transmission system has gained large-scale application in telecommunication network. Its applications cover long-distance communication network, metropolitan communication network and access network. Its fast protection function and superior management performance make it the main transmission means in telecommunication networks. However, with the development of telecommunication network and the improvement of user demand, SDH optical transmission system is exposing some problems:

  • Complex service configuration
  • Low bandwidth utilization
  • Single protection mode

In order to effectively solve the above problems, a new type of network system came into being, which is the automatic switching optical network (ASON), also commonly known as intelligent optical network. It introduces signaling into the transmission network and enhances network connection management and fault recovery by adding a control plane. It supports end-to-end service configuration and multiple forms of service recovery.

Characteristics of ASON Network

ASON networks have the following characteristics relative to traditional SDH networks:

  • It supports end-to-end service auto-configuration.
  • Supports topology auto-discovery.
  • Supports mesh networking protection, which enhances the survivability of the network.
  • Supports differentiated services, which determines the required protection level according to the service level of customer layer signaling.
  • Supporting traffic engineering control, the network can dynamically adjust the logical topology of the network in real time according to the service requirements of the customer layer, realizing the optimal configuration of network resources.

Service Configuration

The topology of traditional SDH optical transmission network is mainly chain and ring, and when configuring services, it is necessary to configure services ring by ring and point by point, and it is mostly manual configuration, which is time-consuming and laborious. As the network scale expands and the network structure becomes more and more complex, this service configuration method can no longer meet the fast-growing user demands.

Intelligent optical network successfully solves this problem and can realize end-to-end service configuration. To configure the service, you only need to select the source node and the host node, specify the bandwidth and service type and other parameters, and the network will automatically complete the configuration of the service.

Bandwidth Utilization

In traditional SDH optical transport networks, the spare capacity is too large, and advanced service protection, service recovery and routing functions are lacking. Intelligent optical network improves the bandwidth utilization rate of the network by providing routing function and hierarchical level of protection and reserving as few spare resources as possible.

Protection Mode

The topology of traditional SDH optical transmission network is mainly in the form of chain and ring, and the service protection methods mainly include MSP and SNCP. The topology of intelligent optical network is mainly MESH structure, which can realize dynamic recovery of service while realizing traditional MSP and SNCP service protection. And, when the network fails in multiple places, the service is restored as much as possible.
