OSN3500 Misuse of OTDR Instrument Causes Damage to SSN3SL16 SDH Single Board

Phenomenon Description

Using OTDR to detect the fiber between two sites (A and B), since the fiber distance between the two sites is 105 km. SSN1SL1602 single board (L-16.2Je interface) is used at both sites. So the distance of the OTDR is set to 100 km in order to detect the fiber between the location 5 km from site B to site A. When connecting the OTDR to the ODF, the connection is wrong (connected to site B). The OTDR was activated to detect the fiber. After testing, the SSN1SL1602 veneer at Site B was found to be damaged.

Cause Analysis

The OTDR has different output optical power for different distances. the overloaded received power of the L-16.2Je interface is -9 dbm. because of the connection of the wrong route, the OTDR sends more power to the L-16.2Je interface than its overloaded received power. so that the L-16.2Je interface is damaged.

Procedure

  1. Replace the damaged veneer with a new veneer.

Please note the following points when testing optical fibers with an OTDR:

  • When installing the equipment, please clearly label the optical ports, pigtails and ODFs. to prevent incorrect operation during later maintenance.
  • When using the OTDR, please determine the distance required for testing and double-check the connection of the ODF.
  • When using the OTDR to test the optical fiber, the pigtail must be removed from the circuit board.
  • When using a long-distance optical port, be sure to connect the routing correctly. Because long-distance optical ports receive low overload optical power, they are easily damaged by optical signals that exceed the overload optical power when connected to the wrong route.
