OSN3500 External Clock Signal Degradation Causes BUS_ERR to be Reported on Crossover Boards

OSN3500 provides two external clock signal input modes that can be freely set to 2M Hz or 2M bit/s. The default mode of input is 2M bit/s; in practical applications, it should be ensured that the input mode matches the output mode of the transmitter. External Clock Source Mode" - used to set the input mode of the external source to 2M Bit/s or 2M Hz. modifying the input mode of the external source may result in switching of the clock source, and therefore may cause the service to generate BERs. A faulty connector on the external clock signal input cable deteriorates the external clock signal, causing the device cross board to frequently report BUS_ERR alarms. This problem can be solved by rebuilding the external clock signal input cable connector.

Phenomenon Description

Site A OptiX OSN 3500 device, with UXCSB cross-over board with expansion subrack, the site clock signal references an external clock source signal and forms an MSP ring with other OptiX OSN 3500 devices, and the other site clocks track the site clock source.

The spare UXCSB cross-over board in slot 10 at site A frequently reports BUS_ERR and HSC_UNAVAIL, and at the same time, there are SYN_BAD alarms on the clock signals of the whole ring, and there is no impact on the service.

Cause Analysis

The possible causes are:
  • The communication cable between the main subrack and the expansion subrack is loose or the cable is damaged.
  • The 10-slot UXCSB crossover board is faulty.
  • External clock source failure.

Procedure

  1. Check the communication cable between the main subrack and the expansion subrack, no looseness is found. Replace several cables again, the fault phenomenon does not disappear.
  2. Soft and hard reset the UXCSB cross board in slot 9 and 10, the fault phenomenon still does not disappear.
  3. Replace the 10-slot cross board, the replacement of the fault phenomenon reappears, to rule out cross board failure.
  4. Analyze the full-ring clock signals have SYN_BAD alarm, and the full-ring clock are tracking the site's clock, check the device's external clock line, found that the connector of the external clock line in the AUX board has a loose, with a hand to press the tight connector of the whole network SYN_BAD, BUS_ERR, HSC_UNAVAIL disappeared instantly. It is judged that the external clock source input signal line connector is faulty.
  5. Remake the connector of the external clock source signal line, the alarm disappeared, and the problem was completely solved.
