OptiX OSN 2500 supports two-fiber-multiplexed segment shared protection ring and four-fiber-multiplexed segment shared protection ring networking applications, in line with ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector) G.841 recommendations and protection reversal time exceeding 50ms. It complies with the ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union - Telecommunication Standardization Sector) G.841 recommendations, and the protection reversal time does not exceed 50ms.

| STM-16 2-fiber ring multiplex segment protection | Maximum support 4 |
| STM-4 Quad Fiber Ring Multiplex Segment Protection | Supports up to 8 |
| STM-4 2-fiber ring multiplex segment protection | Supports up to 12 |
The OptiX OSN 2500 supports the following multiplexed segment protection features.
Adjustable multiplexing bandwidth
The multiplex segment bandwidth refers to the number of VC-4s in the multiplex segment protection ring or multiplex segment protection chain.
For multiplexed segment protection, OptiX OSN 2500 supports adjustable bandwidth in VC-4 without interrupting services. That is, for an STM-16 level bi-directional multiplexed segment ring, its multiplexed segment bandwidth can be varied from 1 to 8 VC-4; for an STM-4 level bi-directional multiplexed segment ring, its multiplexed segment bandwidth can be varied from 1 to 2 VC-4.
Multiplexing Segment Bandwidth Upgrade
OptiX OSN 2500 supports online upgrade of multiplexing segment bandwidth without interrupting services. For example, upgrading from STM-4 to STM-16 multiplexedsegment protection ring.
Two sets of multiplexed segment Kbytes
For the STM-16 optical interface, it provides the processing capability of two sets of multiplexing segment Kbytes, supporting the formation of up to two multiplexing segment rings in a single optical interface.
Multiplexed Segment Suppression Function
OptiX OSN 2500 supports the suppression of VC-4 level misconnection services.
In a multiplexed segment protection ring, each protection time slot is shared by different segments or occupied by additional traffic. When there is no additional traffic in the ring, if a node is isolated from the ring by a multipoint failure, the traffic of different segments occupying the same time slot may seize the same time slot, and thus misconnection of traffic occurs. When there is additional traffic in the ring transmitted in the protected path, even in the single node failure state, the traffic in the working path may seize the protected path time slot carrying the additional traffic, and the misconnection phenomenon occurs.
In order to prevent misconnections from occurring, each node of the device establishes a detailed connection table, and each node knows the source and end points of each AU-4. Combined with the APS command, the possibility of potential misconnections can be detected in advance, so as to discard these potentially misconnected services by inserting AU-AIS alarms.
The system supports the multiplex segment suppression query function: when the multiplex segment protocol triggers multiplex segment suppression and sends the suppression status to the line board, the cross board initiates a query to the handshake detection veneer to inquire about the current multiplex segment suppression status, compares it with the suppression status on the cross board, and initiates a correction if there is an inconsistency, thus improving the reliability of multiplex segment suppression.
