The OSN3500 sets up Ethernet port loopbacks for fault localization. The inner loopback can be used to test whether the fiber cable connecting the Ethernet veneer is normal, whether the PHY and MAC layers of the Ethernet interface are normal, and whether the SDH layer (i.e., the line) is normal. This task describes how to perform a loopback on an Ethernet port. The loopback operation reverses the down-plug AIS signal. In an unprotected state, a loopback may cause a service interruption or an interruption of the communication signal. The loopback operation can only be used for fault localization, and the loopback setting for that port must be cleared after fault localization. After setting the Ethernet port loopback, the loopback will be released automatically if the single board is soft reset or hard reset.
Background Information
The device supports the inner loopback operation of Ethernet ports, which includes the inner loopback of ports at the PHY and MAC layers.
| Loopback Point | Explanation | Legend |
|---|---|---|
| PHY Loopback |
PHY loopback indicates that the Ethernet service sent by a network element is looped back to the SDH layer at the physical layer of the Ethernet interface. It can be used to determine whether the MAC layer, SDH layer and Ethernet single board fiber cable are normal. |
|
| MAC Loopback |
MAC loopback indicates that the Ethernet service sent by a network element is looped back to the SDH layer at the MAC layer of the Ethernet interface. It can be used to determine whether the SDH layer and the Ethernet single-board fiber cable are normal. |

Procedure
- Double-click the Main Topology icon in the Workbench view to enter the main topology diagram.
- On the main topology map, select the network element that needs to be looped back, right-click it, and select "Element Manager".
- Select the Ethernet board that needs to be looped back, and then select "Configuration > Ethernet Interface Management > Ethernet Interfaces" in the Function Tree.
- Select "External Ports" and select the "Basic Properties" tab.
- Select an Ethernet interface in the list, and double click "MAC Loopback" or "PHY Loopback" to select the loopback mode.
- Click "Apply", the "Prompt" dialog box will pop up, click "OK".
- The "Result" dialog box pops up, click "Close".
- Option: Undo Loopback. Set the loopback method to "No Loopback".
